Alison first heard about the Trail when a friend, David Carter, who had received hospice care, had one of the walks dedicated in his memory.
In fact, she and husband Steve started almost 8 years ago but it’s taken a very long time to complete due to COVID and also to some personal health challenges.
The first few walks were enjoyed with their dog Frankie but over time it became clear that the walks were going to be too much for him. When he passed away last year, at nearly 15 years of age, they were determined to get the last walks done anyway.
Alison and Steve have also taken part in the annual Walk The Trail challenge days, raising funds and the profile of her local hospice, St Michaels in St. Leonard’s where Alison works on IPU as a Registered Nurse.
Alison’s favourite walk is the lovely 4 miles from Crowhurst to Battle; she and Steve have walked this one many times!
Their final walk was Halnaker to Chichester, which they did on 24th September 2024. For this special day they wore St. Michael’s T shirts to raise awareness and celebrate their own amazing achievement.
They both highly recommend the Sussex Hospice Trail as walking is so good for fitness and mental health. The 26 walks cover varied terrain and are of different lengths – so something for everyone!
